Published: 01 March 2023
ANATOMY OF THE DEVELOPING PANCREAS Figure 1-1 ANATOMY OF THE DEVELOPING PANCREAS Left: The dorsal pancreatic bud appears first as a bud caudal to the stomach. The smaller ventral pancreatic bud arises from the base of the hepatic diverticulum. Neither bud expresses the sonic hedgehog (SHH) gene whereas the adjacent foregut does. Right: Rotation of the duodenum to the right carries the ventral bud to a position posterior to the dorsal bud, and the two primitive buds fuse to form the pancreas. The dorsal bud gives rise to the cephalad portion of the head, the body, and the tail, whereas the ventral bud gives rise to the caudal portion of the head and the uncinate process. The main pancreatic duct (of Wirsüng) is formed by the union of the distal portion of the dorsal pancreatic duct and the ventral pancreatic duct. The proximal portion of the dorsal pancreatic duct forms the accessory duct of Santorini.
